We all have surface relationships with certain people where we feel comfortable discussing the weather, sports, or work. If we continue only at that level, we will never acquire a true understanding of those people and a deep connection. We may not always want that connection, but when we do, a great way to create it is by having deeper conversations, or meta talks.

These conversations aren’t limited to intentionally creating better connections, though. Sometimes they are the necessary step to clear the air about a difficult topic or to repair a relationship that’s been damaged by dishonesty, misunderstandings, or other trauma.
