Often you’ll discover in groups there is a hierarchy with whoever is the most spiritual, as if enlightenment is a competition. They try to kill the concept in themselves and others that their ego is always the enemy and must be eliminated. They insist that people follow through on spiritual practices and ignore their human needs.

By taking the position of knowing what is best for all people, those at the top of such hierarchies are taking on a Spiritual Ego that can be hurtful and even harmful of other people. They behave toward others from a perspective of You’re not as spiritual as me, and act as if they are better somehow. Then they drive behavior from others to do certain things or behave in certain ways (donate money, give up their homes and cars) in order to attain enlightenment. (See Cults and False Gurus, 4.11.)
