Allow yourself to feel your emotions. If something upsets you, do not seek distraction from it, do not try to hide it from yourself, but sit quietly and feel the upset. It may take practice; you may have to try many times before you’re able to actually feel the feelings and sit with them. And then, if they are particularly painful, you may be tempted to shut them back in again. However, if you can push through and fully feel the emotion, you’ll make it to the other side and feel the cathartic release of it.
A warning comes with this tool. Yes, taking the time to be with your emotions can be very beneficial, however, find balance with this tool. Don’t be with them too much. If you stop to be with your emotions with every interaction and analyze your emotions with every experience, you will not have the time to actually live your life .
